The Philosophy Group meets on a Thursday every 2 weeks at 10.30 a.m in the Hatton Room Winmarleigh House,, Winmarleigh St, WA1 1NB. Please note that this is a change of venue from last year.
The first meeting is on Thursday September 11 2025. Further dates for 2025 are: September 25; October 9 ,23; November 6 20; December 4, 18. 2026: January 15, 29; February 12, 26; March 12, 26; April 9, 23; May 7, 21; June 4, 18.
The format is as follows. A member of the group, or occasionally a guest speaker, produces a paper on a subject of his/her choice which is emailed in advance to members, then presented to the group at the meeting. Members discuss the paper as we go through it. It is a friendly group, and everyone’s view is listened to. You do not need to contribute to the discussion if you do not want to. Just listening is perfectly acceptable, and writing a paper is entirely voluntary.
The topics we cover are wide ranging. Issues currently in the news may be discussed in relation to philosophical considerations, or important philosophers from the classical Greek era to the present day might be our subject. There is no timetable as such.
We start in September with a paper about the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 - 322BCE), whose ideas underpin much of modern thought.
Further topics will include:
Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626) , 4 Idols, barriers to pursuing scientific knowledge.
The Dark Enlightenment. Current issues. Nick Land and Curtis Yarvin are critical of modern democracy which they maintain is fatally flawed and due for change. Relevant to Trump.
Phenomenology. 20th century philosophers Husserle, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty examine how we as human beings see and experience the world around us
