Group Leader Peter Wright
The Ukulele Playalong Group welcomes strummers of all abilities, from beginners to those with many years’ experience. The only ‘must-have’ is a desire to join in and enjoy the songs – either strumming along, singing along, or, preferably, both!
The Playalong Group goes all the way back to 21st March 2013, when Jenny Ruffley founded the original Warrington u3a Ukulele Group. The rest, as they say, is history. The group is a logical ‘next stop’ for graduates of the u3a Ukulele Beginners Group. In fact, both groups share the same ‘songbook’, which is reviewed and updated annually.
At our sessions, the song lyrics & chords are projected onto a screen, so no-one needs to bring along a heavy, hard-copy songbook. However, the list of song titles, and the song-sheets, can be provided in .pdf digital file format, on request.
The songs we perform, (approx. 180 …. and counting), span many genres, including traditional, folk, rock-and-roll, country and ‘pop’. There probably won’t be many that you don’t know. The songs have been chosen to be ‘uke-friendly’ and have been ‘tabbed’ specifically for the uke. Some of the songs will test your chord-changing ability more than others. Practice makes perfect!
The musical lead for the group is provided by a small group of local guitarists, led by John, supported by Mick and Dave This format has evolved over the years since the group was founded. The guitars add real depth and volume to the massed ukes – in addition to masking the occasional bum strum … as if!
We meet on the second and fourth Thursday, Sept. – June, at Alford Hall from 1.30 – 3.30. However, it’s best to arrive 10 minutes or so before the start to get settled. Session 1 comprises a Playlist, selected from the songbook by one of the admin team, followed by a break for coffee, or just a catch-up with other members of the group. Session 2 is ‘request time’ where we invite group members to submit on paper, or simply shout-out, songbook titles they would like to be performed.
Please use the link at the top of the page if you would like some more information and I'll get back to you.
